Combining DOK levels with SBG
DOK LEVELS
Depth of Knowledge is a model thought up by Norman Webb in 1997. It is a framework to understand the rigor of assessments and the level of understanding the students have. Depth of knowledge, or DOK, is broken up into four levels.
Level 1 - Recall and reproduction. Students can remember and recall answers for assessments.
Level 2 - Using skills or concepts - Students can see the vocabulary/concepts/formulas and be able to appropriately use them.
Level 3 - Strategic Thinking. Students will be able to make connections to larger concepts, can analyze data, and use critical thinking to solve problems.
Level 4 - Extended Thinking. Students will be able to take the knowledge and use this knowledge in new and different ways.
The DOK framework was developed to get context to the results of standardized tests. These tests show that students can remember vocabulary, or show they could truly understand the concepts. With the framework, standardized tests changed to be able to truly measure the level of understanding. Now it is used by some teachers in the same way. Teachers use it as a reference for assessments, a framework for worksheets, or grading systems. SBG can not be truly done without some sort of framework for assessments that breaks down the levels of understanding. Knowing the percent correct on a test is not the same as knowing the level of understanding of a student.
These are the most common representations of the depth of knowledge charts.
This is my version of depth of knowledge with a combined learning progression.
This combination is embedded throughout the unit and assessments. Students are assessed on the level one knowledge they have and receive a D-score. As students learn more, their grades increase. If a student continues their learning to the highest level of learning, then they get an A-score for that unit, as long as their project meets that level on their rubric. Tests are broken up into these kinds of questions as well so that the student understands if you answer these levels of questions correctly then you get this grade.
